Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg has revealed that his Catholic faith is the most important thing in his life.
The 48-year-old devout Catholic, who has starred in films including the Transformers’ series and 2001’s Planet of the Apes, opened up about his faith on The Tuff Juice Podcast with Caron Butler.
“Faith is the most important thing,” he told Butler. “That’s how I start my day every day. By the time I open my eyes, before I turn the light on or do anything, I am kind of saying my prayers.
“I go in my prayer room and take that 15 or 20 minutes to express how grateful I am and then also to pray for all the people that I have in my life and the people that I’ve encountered along the way, the people who have been positive in my life, the people who I know are going through hard times and in sickness.
“That’s how I start my day and then I read my prayer book and then I go, eat and start working.”
Wahlberg said he held his faith responsible for getting him through and making him a better person during tough times in his life, including time in jail and addictions.
“When I started focusing on my faith, good things started happening for me in my life at a very young age. In my teens, after I got in trouble, I was like, ‘Okay, the only way to do this is the right way. You can’t cut corners in life.
“You might get away with it here or there but ultimately if you want anything with real substance, with a real solid foundation, you have to put the work and the time in.”
Admitting that everyone makes mistakes and that patience is not his speciality, Wahlberg said he is “working on that” and wants to be the best example he can be to everyone best father he can be to his children.
“I know that God didn’t bless me with all of this to say, ‘forget about where you came from and just go off and do you and have a great life’,” he said. “There is now an opportunity and a responsibility to give back, to be an example and to inspire others to say no matter where you come from or what obstacles you may face, if you do the right thing good things will happen for you.”
